Our Little Friend’s Enrolment
JMC College International, Maharagama held its Little Friend’s Enrolment Ceremony at the Management Centre recently. Our Madam Principal, Mrs. Latha Somathilake and Sylvanna,
Mrs. Savitha Thilakawardana organized this programme. Our chief guest was the CEO, Mr. Sandeepa Jayasekara and the special guest was the Secretary of the JMC Academic Board, Mrs. Sepalika Wijethilake.
There were 12 Little Friends.

They were wearing a white uniform. They sang songs and danced.
It was a very nice ceremony.

They said their promise.
The former Chief Commissioner
of Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association pinned the badges onto their uniforms. The parents watched them happily. Mr. Sandeepa Jayasekara gave away the certificates to the Little Friends and then he addressed the gathering. Then our Madam Principal addressed them. After that a Little Friend’s parent also spoke.
We thanked everyone who helped for organizing this event so well.

Pilgrimage to Adam’s Peak
Sri Pada (Samanala Kanda) is a 2,243m (7,359 feet) tall mountain. It is located in Central Sri Lanka. It is well known for the Sri Pada i.e. the Sacred Footprint.
According to Buddhist tradition it is held to be the footprint of Lord Buddha, in Hindu tradition that of Lord Shiva and Islamic and Christian tradition that of Adam.
One misty morning, at the end of last year, my parents, sisters, grandfather and I went to Nallathanniya via Hatton to climb the Adam’s Peak. We took our lunch and started to climb up. We walked and walked and walked by chanting ‘gathas’.

First we came to a Japanese garden.
It was closed. Again we started to climb the mountain, passing many boutiques. We came to Seetha Gangula and washed our legs, faces and hands using a lime.
We went to Indikatu Pahana. As a tradition, newcomers to Sri Pada tie a thread to a needle there. We missed Haramiti Pahana since it is on the Ratnapura Road.

It was 8 p.m., and getting very hard to climb the Mahagiri Dabaya since it was dark and very cold. The sky was full of stars. I could see the stars very close and clearly, feeling like I was on a cloud. Before reaching Ahas Gauwa, we rested for a while and had a plain tea. Finally we reached the Uda Maluwa where the Sacred Footprint of Lord Buddha is situated and we also went to the Saman Devalaya. Since it was cold, windy and misty, we rested inside the hall.
The next morning we watched the first sunrise (Ira Sevaya) and took part in a Buddha Pooja. We started to climb down. We saw the Castlereigh Reservoir and the Seven Mountain range covered with trees.
This is a journey of strength and faith. Climbing Sri Pada was a very memorable trip for me and my little sisters.

Current World  and Nature
Garbage dumped in rivers
Traffic congestion due to flyovers
Poverty in cities
that everyone pities.

How was the world before?
People loved nature to the core
No poverty to be seen
The cities were quite clean

Earlier we enjoyed the beauty of the moon
But now the night ends soon
The sun provides us with light
But the LED lights are far too bright

Forests are destroyed and
new buildings are built
But no man is in guilt
They cut down trees and make paper
and write down, save trees and water

Stop men from cutting down trees
So the process of deforestation will freeze
To save the rivers from pollution
Recycling waste is the best solution

Let’s not procrastinate
But be very passionate
Let’s save our Earth
by doing something worth

Who I dream to be when I grow up
Since I was a child, my parents often took me to the library and I started reading books and it became my hobby. I used to read Beatrix Potter books, they were my favourite. Peter Rabbit, Brer Rabbit, Ms. Tabitha and her kittens and Ms. Jemima Puddle were some of the characters in her books that I was fond of.
I began to write short essays. At the age of six, I started reading Enid Blyton books which my grandparents bought me. I had never seen these books in the library I used to go to in the USA.

I found the Funday Times magazine and became a member; I started to send essays and short stories. Whenever I finish writing a story I show it to my parents and aunt so they can edit it.
My sincere thanks should go to my mother who taught me to read when I was just four and now I’m enjoying a lifetime of reading. Writing is something I treasure doing, and I know that it’ll be a possibility for me to keep on writing and never stop!

Mother Lanka

Proud are we to be your children
even though faraway we dwell.
Lucky, are we to be your children
our hearts with love it will swell

Warmth of your bosom we miss
love and care too we miss.
Beauty in abundance again we miss.
Dear mother how sadly we miss.

Listen to us, mother dear
someday we will be back no fear.
Guard you, serve you far and near.
Crown, you the queen of the earth that year.
