My sister’s first day at school
My sister is Ranuli Aadya Rodrigo. Her first day of school was February 6, 2017. She was so excited to go to the school. My parents checked a lot of schools but they were not good. At last they found a school, it was Guidance. She was dreaming of going to school and then her dream came true.
She is in Nursery. She woke up early morning and she dressed up. She went in a bus and she had a lot of fun in school. She ate all the food that my mother gave her. She had beautiful books and exercise books. She had colour pencils and pencils. She has two teachers and there were lots of children, both boys and girls. She had a small purple and pink uniform. From that day onwards she loved school a lot.

My country
My country is Sri Lanka. It is a small island. It is a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean.

Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte is the capital of my country. Sri Lanka has a population of more than 20 million people. There are nine provinces  in my country. In ancient times, Sri Lanka was known as the ‘Granary of the East’ as well as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’.

My country has a hot, wet climate because it is situated close to the equator. There are many attractive places in my country. Therefore
many foreigners come to my country to see its beauty. My country is fertile. Therefore many crops grow. Paddy is the main crop grown in many parts of my country. In addition to paddy, tea, coconut and rubber are grown as well. They are the main crops in Sri Lanka.
My country is multi-cultural. Sinhalese, Tamils, Burghers, Muslims and Malays live here. My country is a sacred land in which many heroes were born. I am proud of my country.

How I spent my school vacation
My aim is to become a scientist.
From my young age I have taken interest in Science, but now I have decided to make it my career and become a scientist like Newton and other scientists. I want to achieve my goal and become a great scientist. I also want to invent many things for the sake of our country and I want to be famous in the whole world.
If I would become a scientist then some of my inventions would be a time machine, big and small light etc. I hope this will not remain my dream and soon will be reality and at last I will become a famous scientist.

Independence Day
The date of February 4, from the year 1948 in Sri Lanka has become a very important day. It was the luckiest day of the year 1948. Sri Lanka became independent after lots of hard struggle and sacrifices by our brave and courageous fighters. Thanks to them Sri Lanka is free.

The day February 4th is a national holiday for our country. It is celebrated all over the country. Usually the main celebration takes place in Colombo, where the current president raises the National Flag and delivers a televised speech, followed by a grand parade.

When Sri Lanka gained independence, the public of Sri Lanka had chosen their first Prime Minister, Hon. D. S. Senanayake. All the people rejoice and celebrate on this special day with great joy every year.

My perfect job
If I could pick a perfect job, it would be as a fashion designer. I have always wanted to be a fashion designer and I have always dreamed of doing a degree in designing at Raffles Institute. It would make me so happy to work in a place that is wholly concentrated on designing clothes. Clothes for parties, for formal occasions, you name it. I would like nothing better than to spend my days creating new designs and to work in a clothing company.

It would be perfect for me in several ways. One is because I have always been interested in fashion. Even as a little girl, I used to dress up and grab my mother’s high heels and handbag and strut around like a grown-up. Fashion designing can open so many doors for me and it would be a great honour to take part in the annual Mercedes Benz Fashion Show
and experience the wonderful life of a fashion designer.

Fashion designing would be an ideal job for me also because I have always wanted to play about with clothes, adding bizarre bits and pieces, here and there. Also in the world of fashion designing, you can go all out and design anything because it all depends on your imagination. This is my dream job and a perfect one for me.

Belonging to Nature
I belong to human society. Earth and Mother Nature are not only for animals but for humans too. Humans evolved over thousands of years from apes to cavemen. Compared to our past, technology has improved from the stone tools to modern computers. But not all technology has been nature-friendly. The increasing number of vehicles and factories has polluted the environment with carbondioxide and other harmful chemicals. Deforestation has also increased alarmingly. All this has contributed to global warming.

The smallest mistake could be fatal. For example, a small caterpillar can ruin big plants and pollution can ruin the whole earth. Humans evolved for survival but at the cost of Mother Nature. Instead of destroying what Mother Nature created, we must save earth. Our species must go on for a very long time, and during that time we must develop new ways to save our beloved earth.
We all belong to Mother Nature, both animals and humans, from the biggest blue whale to the tiniest ant. So that’s’ why I’m so glad to be a living, breathing, being, belonging to Mother Nature, home to humans and animals that will hopefully co-exist for generations to come.

Our National Anthem
The National Anthem of a country is as important as the National Flag. Singing the National Anthem is the identity of a nation. We must respect the country’s National Anthem. Our National Anthem is ‘Sri Lanka Matha.’ It was earlier sung as ‘Namo, Namo, Matha.’ It was written and composed by Ananda Sarmarakoon.
When the British were ruling Sri Lanka,

our National Anthem was ‘God Save the King.’ It was accepted as the oldest national anthem in the world. In 1949, ‘Namo, Namo, Matha’ had been selected as our National Anthem. It was translated into English and Tamil. We must stand to attention whenever we hear our National Anthem.

Water is a gift
Water is a valuable gift of our Mother Nature. All living beings need water to survive. People require water for different purposes. We can’t live without water. We take water from wells, taps, tanks, rivers and streams. We need water for our daily activities like bathing, washing, cooking etc. In addition, water is a must for agriculture purposes. We can’t get any food if there is no water.
We need to protect our water resources as water is our life. We can produce electricity from water. We shouldn’t waste a single
droplet of water.

My favourite animal
My favourite animal is an animal who can run fast, is strong and lives in herds. Yes, it is the horse. A horse generally, can run very fast. They are strong, elegant and patient creatures. They have been great, loyal, helpful friends to humans for many centuries. They helped humans in transportation, war and agriculture. Even now, people use horses for their day-to-day needs.
Horses belong to the family of Equidae, as they are odd-toed creatures. Even ponies, zebras and donkeys are like them. They eat rough grass in the wild but if they are domestic, they are given barley, oats, sugar beet, bran and more. They are also known as ‘hard feed.’ It is a quite complicated way to learn how to groom horses.

There are many stories which are based on horses. One popular story is ‘Black Beauty’ written by Anna Sewell. A famous film is ‘Spirit, the stallion of the Cimmaron’. Both say about how horses are treated when they are owned by different people. We have to protect horses from being extinct, before it is too late.
