70th anniversary for ‘Broken Promises’

‘Kadawunu Poronduwa’ which heralded the coming of Sinhala cinema celebrates 70 years this year.

First shown on January 21, 1947 at the Kingsley Cinema, Colombo, most of the the main starsof the film were from Negombo, a city famous for its drama and music.

Starting from B. A. W. Jayamanne, the first lead star of a Sinhala film, Rukmani Devi who is undoubtedly the queen of Sri Lankan silverscreen and many others in the stellar cast  were from Negombo. The others in the cast were Peter Peiris, Miriam Jayamanne, Hugo Fernando, Stanley Mallawarachchi, Eddie Jayamanne, Gemini Kantha, Timothius Perera, J B Perera and Rupa Devi.

In honour of the great contribution made, a ceremony in felicitation of those participated in the film and their family members will be held at 10 am on February 9 at the auditorium of Negombo Municipal Council.
