My hobbies
My wonderful hobbies are drawing pictures, reading any kind of material I find interesting and collecting pencil shavings and stamps. I also have an extraordinary hobby, which is to scare people with authentic looking toy insects such as rats, lizards and beetles that I have collected over time.

I have drawn many pictures and some of them have even appeared in the Funday Times. My bottle of multi-coloured pencil shavings
comes in use for my art too.

Collecting stamps is something I started only this year. So far I have 217 stamps from 29 countries beautifully arranged in two stamp albums. Reading not only helps improve my general knowledge but my English too.
Hobbies are very useful because I get the opportunity to learn so much more about the world. All in all I have my lovely hobbies to spend those boring hours during the holidays.

My trip to Kandy
During the August holidays, my cousin Rushda from Qatar came to Sri Lanka. I was very happy to have Rushda at my home. We went to Kandy on the Expo Rail. We both were seated next to each other. The train crew served food for us. We were talking all the time.
We saw mountains and waterfalls. We passed many tunnels. We had booked a hotel in Kandy. We rested
for some time and had a nice lunch.

In the evening, we went to the swimming pool and we had lots of fun. The next morning we sadly went back home. After some days, Rushda went back to Qatar and we were so sad. We had a nice trip to Kandy.
It was a wonderful holiday which I will never forget.

My best friend
Among many friends, I have got a best friend. Her name is Chanuli. She is eight years old. She helps me when I am in
trouble and I help her when she is in trouble too. Sometimes we get angry with each other but we become friends again.
She likes me and I like her.

We both play together with more friends. Her family members are very kind people. Her hobby is playing with dolls. She loves to eat sausages and loves to drink Cream Soda. She is the only child in her family. She is a real friend to me. A real friend comes for a reason. Others just come for a season. Others come and go.
We are best friends forever.

What great fun
My school, Willesden College International, held an exhibition on November 9 and 10, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., so as to facilitate a poor school in Padukka. My fellow students worked hard to make the exhibition a success by making creative things with the help of our teachers.

On the day of the exhibition, the school premises were full of noise which showed that the children were enjoying the day best. This exhibition contained various handcrafts to sell as well as to improve the general knowledge of the visitors.

My class, 8-Science, held a Haunted Stall where we sold stationery with bookmarks, decorated pencils and fancy goods and a food store with sandwiches, rolls and sweets and a game store with video games. My class teacher Mr. Harshaka gave a great support to us.

From my viewpoint, I think that all  the parents and visitors enjoyed the event very much. The principal, vice principal and the teachers all contributed to this exhibition with creative ideas to encourage the students.

I personally give my thanks to everybody who dedicated themselves towards this exhibition in various manners.

A visit to an ancient city
Last term our school organized a trip to Polonnaruwa. All of us were astonished after hearing this. So we counted our fingers till the suggested date to get a good enjoyment. That morning I woke up at 3 a.m. and packed my bag. My father took me to school. As soon as I met my friends, we got into the bus. At about 5 a.m., we started to sing songs. A few hours later our bus stopped for breakfast.

After having breakfast, again we started our journey. Our first stop was the ‘Parakramabahu Maligaya’. It was a creation of our kings. We could see its ancient story. After that we went to the famous ‘Gal Viharaya’. We worshipped and took some photos. Our next stop was the ‘Thivanka Pilimageya’. There were many ancient and beautiful arts.

Our next visit was the ‘Polonnaruwa Vatadage’. We saw the very beautiful and amazing ‘Sandakadapahana’ near that. We had our lunch near ‘Parakrama Samudraya’. After that we reached ‘Potgul Vehera’. It was an ancient library. Not only that but also we didn’t forget to see the ‘Parakramabahu Statue’.

At about 3.30 p.m., we started our return journey. Our bus came fast. Fortunately we were able to reach the school after midnight. This was my first visit to Polonnaruwa and it was an unforgettable experience in my life.

Birds
Birds are a class of vertebrates. Animals especially birds are very beautiful. For example we can say the peacock is a beautiful bird among them. Most birds can fly but some can’t such as kiwi, ostrich and penguin. Birds keep a high body temperature as they need energy.
The smallest bird is the humming bird. It lives in the trees by making nests. The penguin cannot fly but it is known as an ‘excellent swimmer.’ Birds are the descendants of the dinosaurs. The early bird looked like the carnivorous dinosaurs. The correct time to watch birds is spring time.

Ancient cities of Sri Lanka
Although Sri Lanka is a small country in extent, it inherits a long history more than 2500 years. Anuradhapura is the first capital of Sri Lanka, where a lot of ancient ruins can be seen. Ruins of very ancient buildings, places, pagodas and tanks bear evidence to a prosperous era of our country. When we visit the ancient city of Anuradhapura, we can really be proud of our forefathers and their skills and craftsmanship.
Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambadeniya are some of the other historical places in the country. Aukana and Vijithapura are two other important places in the history of Sri Lanka. Vijithapura is believed to be the place where King Dutugemunu fought with King Elara. The Buddha statue at Aukana marvels people at its unique quality.

However, there are many historical places in our country. As real citizens we all must be proud of our history and our great ancestors. Further, we all must try to protect these historical monuments for our younger generation.

The meadow of flowers
After the long hike through the green forest we all were tired. That is when the guide announced we could rest for some time near the big maple tree. The tree bark was covered with various creepers.

I heard a little robin chirping on a branch of the tree. I was wandering about the forest to enjoy the sunny morning delight. My eyes were inspired when I saw the beautiful lavender flower meadow down the forest.

I couldn’t resist but during the next few minutes I could feel myself running towards the flower meadow. I ran as fast as I could to spend my time with the glittering lavender flowers. The flowers were covered with dew drops that made them glisten in the sunshine. The beautiful butterflies came flying towards the flowers and started sucking nectar from the flowers. It was a wonderful scene to watch.

My nose was eager to smell the flowers. It was very nice to spend my time in the meadow of flowers. Until I remembered that I should go or the others will continue without me. I was sad to leave the meadow but I made a promise that someday I will come back to the meadow of flowers.
