Books are my best friends
When I was very small I couldn’t read sentences but I was able to read small words. I had lots of books with beautiful pictures. My father encouraged me to read, by giving me many storybooks. I started reading with the Ladybird ranges and then went on to the Ladybird classics.
By this time I was able to read very well. Actually it became a hobby.

My father bought me more and more books and whenever I had free time, I read them over and over again. It is very interesting to go through my encyclopedia and find more details about the things I learn in school.
About a year ago, I started reading the ‘Secret Seven’ and the ‘Famous Five’ series of books. I also like the Harry Potter books. By now I have collected lots of interesting books and I have my own mini library in my room. I also borrow the books that
I don’t have at home from our school library.
I have improved my knowledge by reading and I do enjoy lying down on my bed with an interesting book.
I love books very much.

Universal Children’s Day
In 1954, the UNO appointed a day to honour children. Children are the wealth and future of the world. Children are the most helpless section in society. Children need love and protection. Children have rights. They have rights for protection, education and health.
Different countries celebrate Children’s Day on different days. In Sri Lanka we celebrate Children’s Day on October 1. We organize programmes for children. But by the next day, they are forgotten. Elders must protect and look after them. There are so many children who don’t get a proper education. We must stop this and give education to all children.
Children’s Day is not only for celebrations. Elders must understand and protect us. That is the real Children’s Day.

How JMC Maharagama celebrated World Peace Day
World Peace Day is celebrated on September 21. It was first celebrated in 1982 and its theme was ‘The Right to Peace  of People’.
In our school, the children, teachers and madam principal celebrated Peace Day on September 21, 2016 in a nice manner.

We all gathered in the corridor with paper origami doves in our hands. Each dove had a peace message hung onto its beak. We all flew the doves together. All the doves with messages flew nicely. The students and parents who were on the ground collected the peace messages. They read the messages and shared them with others. It was a very happy moment. At last we collected all the messages and pasted them on the wall for everyone to read. We wrote some of them down in our notebooks. We learned a lot about peace by reading those messages.

We thanked our Principal Mrs. Latha Somathilake and the teacher Mrs. Dulitha Kalukapuge for organizing this unique activity for us to learn and enjoy.

The importance of nutrients
All nutrients are important to our body. Main nutrients are proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins. Proteins help for growth and repairing of the body tissues. We get proteins in food like beans, soybeans, milk, eggs and fish. Carbohydrates give us energy. We find carbohydrates
in rice, wheat, potatoes and yams.
By eating meat, meat products, butter we can get fats to our body. In fish, eggs, dark green vegetables we get minerals. They are helpful to keep our body healthy. We find them in liver, yellow and red fruits.
When we take a balanced diet, we get all the nutrients.

Let’s save our planet
We humans live on planet Earth, the only planet with life. So why do we pollute it? Why are we taking advantage of our planet? Since this is the only planet with life, we must protect it. People destroy the environment around them. The thick smoke from factories destroys the ozone. The fumes from vehicles make global warming. When people throw garbage into rivers and lakes, it pollutes the water. People cut down trees, which decreases the amount of air for us to breathe.
Why are we so harsh to Mother Nature? We must act in a very environment friendly way. So we must learn to protect our environment and save our planet.

Friendship

There are many valuable things in life but friendship may be one
of the most important among all.
To live life without the experience of friendship is life without living. Human interaction is a necessity of survival, but developed friendships are essential to the successful wellbeing of everyone. Based on the American Heritage Dictionary, the definition of a friend is a person whom one knows, likes and trusts. But to all, friendship has no defined terminology. The definition of a friend and friendship is based upon one’s own notions. Many people look for different characteristics in friends, things that may be common in nature.
