Nearly 900,000 people in all nine provinces are affected by the prevailing drought, but the situation is likely to change for the better with the onset of the monsoon expected within a few days, the Disaster Management Centre said.

The provinces worst affected by the prevailing dry weather conditions are the North Central Province ((163,559 persons), the Eastern Province (158,799 persons) and the Southern Province 120,719 persons).

However the situation is likely to improve within the coming days as the Met Department said atmospheric conditions were getting favourable for afternoon thundershowers.

Showers have been experienced in several areas in the Eastern and North Central Provinces in the past few days.
