“We have a soft spot for charity,” says Naushad Rassool, explaining why ‘Flame’ has performed for many causes over the years. He adds that he is a firm believer of the fact that the good that you do comes back to you, and states that everyone should be charitable – regardless of whether they share his philosophy on charity or not.

‘Flame in concert’ will be at the Dutch Burgher Union in aid of the DBU’s programme to sponsor the higher education of children whose parents cannot afford to fund their education.

Flame began as a group of Merry-Ann Singers with a penchant for folk music and has evolved over the decades to a band that can play many genres of music to cater to almost any situation. While you can expect to hear the likes of Simon and Garfunkel, the Eagles, the Beatles, James Taylor and Jim Reeves at their upcoming concert, most of their songs will be played impromptu to cater to the tastes of the audience. In fact, Naushad feels that the concert will be lively and informal this time. “People can dance, they can come and sing if they want to and as always, they can definitely sing along,” he says.

The band will also be entertaining requests, which is something Naushad feels confident about doing because of the band’s large repertoire of songs which have been practised to perfection over the years. To him, Flame is one big happy family of members from all races and religions who are always happy to gauge the crowd and play their music accordingly and Naushad feels that Flame’s success is based on their ability to remain fluid – devoid of one official genre or style.

Naushad: Everyone should be charitable

The band will have a new addition this time – Kevin Almeida will be joining the known faces and the band is excited to have Kevin’s vocal talent in the group. They promise people two hours of entertainment and fun along with all the usual trappings of a Flame concert.

Naushad and the band welcome people to witness ‘Flame in concert’, on Wednesday, October 12 at the DBU at 7p.m.Tickets priced at Rs. 1,500 are available at the DBU office, 114, Reid Avenue, Colombo 4 or can be obtained by calling Neomy on 2584511.
