Number of three-wheeled vehicles increases dramatically

The number of three-wheeled vehicles registered in the country has risen sharply. The ratio of three-wheelers to people stands at 1:20 (1 three-wheeler for every 20 persons).

According to latest statistics compiled by the Department of Motor Traffic, at the end of last month the number of three-wheeled vehicles in the country stood at 1,094,815.

In August this year, 35,773 new three-wheeled vehicles were registered.

The highest number of three wheeled vehicles were registered in the Western Province with 352,540 vehicles, followed by 140,823 in the Southern Province and 135,791 in the Central Province. The least number of three-wheeled vehicles registered -1,331- was in the Eastern Province.

Last year saw 129,547 three-wheeled vehicles registered -the highest in a four-year period. The all-time high was in 2011 when 138,426 vehicles were registered.

More than 600,000 three-wheeled vehicles were registered over the past eight years.

At end August, 702,188 cars were registered against the one million three-wheeled
vehicles.

Currently Sri Lanka has total of 6.6 million vehicles including 3.5 million motor bikes.
