Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Fasizer Musthapa is to call for a report from the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) about the slow progress of the road construction project around Thurstan Road, Royal and Thurstan Colleges and the Lionel Wendt Theatre.

Many are affected by the slow pace of work around the Lionel Wendt Theatre

“I will look into the matter of the delay in the work,” Mr. Musthpaha said. The Sunday Times last week exposed the delay in carrying out the project and the inconvenience caused to parents who come to drop their children at the schools, those who come to the Lionel Wendt Theatre and the residents of the area.

Mr. Musthapa said the municipal council authorities and the other parties have to come up with a systematic construction plan, otherwise the road will forever be under repair as other parties may be digging up pipe lines for repair work. “I am the Minister who links local governing bodies to Parliament, it is not for me to intervene in CMC work but if people are affected it is my responsibility to intervene,” he said.

Meanwhile an official of the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry had checked with the Municipal Commissioner V.K.A. Anura regarding the delay in the project and had been told that since work is done only during night time the project was delayed.

However, no night work is carried out on the project. This was confirmed by a senior officer of the Cinnamon Gardens Police.
