Mathura, in Indian mythology is the birthplace of God Krishna and is one of the seven sacred cities of India. It is also famed as a bastion of vegetarian cuisine.

In Colombo, Mathura, the well known vegetarian restaurant specialising in South and North Indian cuisine, a joint venture with the  Woodlands Hotel chain of India was relaunched in Bambalapitiya.

Now located in a more spacious place with ample car parking on Melbourne Avenue, Bambalapitiya, the launch had a host of dignitaries attending from Indian High Commissioner, Y.K. Sinha and Mrs Sinha, Ministers Gamini Jayawickrame Perera and Gayantha Karunathilake, MPs and members of the film fraternity.

Traditional Nadaswaram music by musicians from Tamilnadu, India was played courtesy of the Bambalapitiya Pillayar Temple Chief Gurukkal. M. B. Samarasingha and his troupe of musicians entertained the diners with popular Hindi movie songs of yesteryear.

Mathura also caters to Hindu weddings and those who wish to serve vegetarian food at weddings and receptions.
