The Right to Information Act is now in force with Speaker Karu Jayasuriya giving his assent to the Act on Thursday.
The Bill was passed unanimously in Parliament on June 24.  However, in terms of the Act, certain provisions will come into effect only after six months.

The law provides the citizens the right to access official information with certain exemptions such as information relating to national security. Sri Lanka became the fifth country in South Asia to enact Right to Information legislation.
