Latest tech applications for competitive garment sector introduced by DMS

Overcoming issues like sufficient labour, ensuring high efficiency and controlling overheads, etc in Sri Lanka’s garment sector is one of the main challenges of this highly, competitive global export industry. To overcome these challenges DMS Garment Technologies (Pvt) (DMS) Ltd, promoters of the world’s best solutions towards lean manufacturing, has been supporting the Sri Lankan garment industry by supplying the latest high tech solutions available from its principals Gerber USA, Eton Sweden, GSD UK and C-tex UK, etc.

To keep the Sri Lankan garment and textile industry abreast with the latest technologies available, DMS organized a seminar for the garment manufacturers in Colombo this week where expert representatives of these high tech software, hardware and machinery suppliers appraised participants as to how these technologies could be applied to improve efficiencies and how they could reduce labour time and energy. Michael Matthysz, Director/GM, DMS said that the seminar is focused on all the tools needed for productivity increase, efficiency increase while providing hardware/software and solutions to users in an ergonomic world environment.

He said that the entire exercise is focused on mean manufacturing concepts where the work in progress (WIP) is minimised to save valuable working capital from being blocked up in the factory floor and responding to their international buyers with the highest possible productivity at the lowest cost of production. He said that using these technologies would ensure just in time shipments, meet deadlines and the ever increasing demand on delivery, product price and quality to stay competitive in the global market. On the sidelines of the seminar, Sathyajith Nelundeniya, Manager, Sales and Applications, DMS told the Business Times (BT) that it is very important to maintain high productivity in the garment and textile industry in the face of stringent competition by the other global suppliers.

He said that they have been with the garment manufacturers for the last 25 years offering them the most vital back-up support by providing latest technology with software and hardware. The current seminar, he indicated is to introduce the latest software upgrades and new machinery. These innovative technologies applicable to garment industry were out about a month ago and the present exercise is to introduce them to the Sri Lankan manufacturers. He said that there are around 180 to 200 garment manufacturers in Sri Lanka and out of them more than 100 are their customers. The seminar saw around 200 participants. He said that it is vital that these manufacturers be acquainted with labour saving, fabric saving and high productivity methods have to be adopted, if the export industry is to survive.
