Tamil Union crush Galle CC with a day to spare

After conceding a first innings lead Tamil Union fought back to record a crushing 6-wicket win against Galle CC with a day to spare in their AIA Premier Super League cricket encounter concluded at the CCC ground yesterday.

Galle CC after making a formidable score of 312 in the first inning bowled out Tamil Union for 191. But a pathetic batting performance in the second innings brought the downfall of Galle CC. They ended their second innings on 87 for 7 on day two. Resuming their innings on day three, Galle CC succumbed to the bowling combination of Suranga Lakmal and Shaminda Eranga before being bundled out for a paltry 126.

Tamil Union, chasing 279 runs for victory, was given a flying start by openers Dhananjaya de Silva and Sithara Gimhan. They put on 72-run opening stand. De Silva joined Tharanga Paranavithana to add a valuable 126-run stand for the second wicket before the opener was dismissed for a well compiled 124 made off 131 balls inclusive of 14 boundaries and three sixes.
Later Paranavithana and Pulina Tharanga sealed the game for Tamil Union after adding an unbroken stand of 60 runs for the fourth wicket. Paranavithana made an unbeaten 67 while Tharanga remained unbeaten on 46.

Half tons by Dhanushka Gunatilaka, Dimuth Karunaratne and Thilina Kandamby helped SSC make a bold reply against Ragama CC at the end of third day’s play at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
SSC, resuming on their overnight score of 22 for no loss, was steered by three partnerships. The combination of opener Gunatilaka and Karunaratne gave them sound start as both put on 119 runs, followed by a 53-run stand for the second wicket between Gunatilaka and Kaushal Silva. Then followed a partnership of 82 runs for the fifth wicket between Kavindu Kulasekera and Thilina Kandamby, which enabled SSC to end the day on 313 for 6.

Earlier Ragama CC was steered by knocks by Udara Jayasundara who made a career best knock of 318 with 34 boundaries and a six and Lahiru Thirimanne who hit a 135 with 14 boundaries. The pair associated in a massive 267-run stand for the third wicket helping Ragama CC to amass a score of 665.

NCC was on top against CCC when play stopped on day three at Braybrooke Place. The third day’s play saw CCC, resuming on their overnight score of 285 for 5, being bowled out for 312.

This was in reply to the massive total of 510 made by NCC largely helped by Jehan Mubarak, who hit 197 and Upul Tharanga, who made 172. NCC batting for the second time, put up another formidable act before declaring on 309 for 6 with Mubarak, Tharanga and Angelo Perera hitting half centuries. This gave CCC a target 508 runs. CCC however was struggling on 144 for 6, needing further 364 runs when play gets underway on the final day today.

Shanuka Dulaj shone on day three for Moors SC against Colts CC in the match played at NCC ground. Dulaj hit an unbeaten 112 that included 12 boundaries was associated in an unbroken 103-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Sanitha de Mel, enabling Moors SC, resuming from their overnight score of 417 for 7, post a massive score of 597 in reply to Colts CC’s 266.
