Forget horses, forget elephants, the new way to play polo in Sri Lanka is in a TukTuk! Last weekend the Lakderana 2016 TukTuk Polo Tournament took place at Marine Walk football field outside Galle Fort with four local teams and four international teams competing for the winners’ prize of Rs. 200,000.

Organised by Geoffrey Dobbs and his niece Rachel Dobbs, this was the second ever tuktuk polo tournament, last year’s event being on a much smaller scale. The wonderful thing about TukTuk polo, is that anyone can get involved, said Rachel adding that “after the success of this year we hope to take this sport to the next level and promote it as a nationwide game.”

This sport requires a lot of skill – the players not only have to concentrate on the ball but also must direct the driver. Equally the drivers have the difficult job of ensuring there are no crashes…. Or as few as possible! Last Sunday, there were definitely a few near misses with tuktuks ending up on two wheels!

Team Cantaloupe was this year’s winner after a nail-biting final.
