Bidding process for names on vehicle number plates

The Motor Traffic Department will go in for competitive bidding in cases where more than one person request for a number plate with the same name for their vehicles. Motor Traffic Commissioner-General Jagath Chandrasiri explained that under a new scheme coming into effect soon persons would be able to display a name on the number plate, but they would have to go through a bidding process if the same name was sought by more than one person.

The cost of the personal number plates will range from Rs. 1 million upwards to Rs 5 million. He said that in the event the same name was requested by one owner the name would be followed by one or more numerals. “If a person has four vehicles the name will be followed by 1 to 4. But he or she will have to pay Rs. 1 million for each,” he said.

The move will enable persons to display only a selected name instead of a number, but the actual number under which the vehicle is registered will be included in the revenue licence which the owner is supposed to display in the front of the vehicle.
The bids could be made only online and the facilities to apply will be provided soon on the department’s website.

The department has already called for tenders to prepare the new number plates which will be put into use.
