Book Launch: Death of a Lawyer in Police Custody

“Death of a Lawyer in Police Custody – The Wijedasa Liyanarachchi case”, a book written by Professor Ravindra Fernando, Senior Professor of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Faculty of Medicine, and Acting Director, Centre for the Study of Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, will be launched at 4.30 p.m. on November 27 at the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.

The book is based on the death of Attorney-at-Law Wijedasa Liyanarachchi, who was arrested on h August 25, 1988 at Hulftsdorp. He died a few hours after admission to the General Hospital, Colombo, on September 3. The post-mortem report disclosed that there were over 100 injuries on the body of the late Attorney and that death had been caused by shock and haemorrhage, as a result of internal and external injuries caused by blows with a blunt weapon.

Professor Fernando attended the post-mortem examination as an observer at the request of H. L. de Silva, the then President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. President’s Counsel and the present President of the Bar Association Geoffrey Alagaratnam will chair the book launch ceremony to be held during the National Law Week.
