The accused in the rape and murder of five-year-old Seya Sadewmi has been indicted by the Attorney General following intense investigations by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The crime shook the nation after the body of the little girl was found in a canal just 300 metres from her home at Akarangala in Badalgama near Gampaha a day after she was reported missing on September 12 and after a search launched by three police stations — Kotakadeniya, Katana and Divulapitiya.

A false arrest during the early days of the Police investigations led to confusion in the hunt for the suspect, Saman Jayalath, who will now face a High Court trial.
