Healthy mind in a healthy body
A healthy mind and a healthy body is needed to lead a healthy lifestyle. So as children we should maintain a healthy mind and a healthy body.  What is a healthy mind? A healthy mind is the mental fitness of a person. To maintain a healthy mind we should have a peaceful and quiet environment. Engaging in sports activities, engaging in a hobby, counseling and meditation are some of the ways of maintaining a healthy mind. Problem solving, decision making, creative thinking and  self-discipline are some advantages of maintaining a healthy mind.

A healthy body is the physical fitness of a person. To maintain a healthy body, fresh air, clean water, healthy food, sports, exercise and a good environment are required. Immunity, appearance and being active are some of the advantages of maintaining a healthy body.

A healthy mind and a healthy body will lead you to a happy lifestyle.

Our school walk
My school – Wesley College celebrated our school walk and concert of grit on October 3, 2015.
A large group of students, old boys, staff, parents and friends participated in our
Wesley Walk. The Wesley Walk was one of the biggest gatherings ever seen at a Wesley College event in recent years as more than 4000 people participated. The parade had old cars,  double-deckers, jeeps, trucks and bikes.

When the walk ended at the CR&FC grounds, a concert was organized to entertain the crowd. I too was able to entertain the crowd as I was in the Junior Western Band. This year’s Wesley College Walk was a great success and I look forward to next year.

Elders

People who are above the age of sixty can be called elders. They are very important to our society. Our grandfather and grandmother are elders. They have contributed much for our well-being. We must respect and look after them very well. Nutritious food must be given to them. When they fall ill they should be given proper medicine.

Our grandparents always give us good advice. They tell us interesting stories. It is our duty to protect our elders.

The best gift I ever gave
Once I was reading the newspaper and came across a story about a boy named Saman who had to undergo heart surgery but his parents were unable to meet the cost of this surgery. His father was a farmer and his mother made paper bags used to sell peanuts at small boutiques. Their young son could not be treated as they were extremely poor and the surgery cost 500,000 rupees.

When I read this, it brought tears to my eyes and I was determined to convince my parents to help this poor child. I showed the story to my father and asked whether we could help poor Saman. He thought a while and said that it was not a small amount but as this family was in a bad situation we must help them. He suggested we ask our relatives to help collect this amount.
With the help of our relatives, we opened a charity account named, ‘Helping Saman’and started collecting money. Within a short span of one month we successfully collected 500,000 rupees.

We all went to Saman’s home in Polonnaruwa and were welcomed warmly. We handed over the money and they were extremely happy.  After a few weeks Saman was a perfectly normal boy. They were extremely thankful to my relatives
and me. I was so happy and thankful to God Almighty for giving me this opportunity to help a deserving child. This was the best gift I have ever given.

International Children’s Day
International Children’s Day is celebrated all over the world. It is celebrated on different days in some countries. In our country, Children’s Day is celebrated on October 1 . Children’s Day is celebrated to protect the rights of children.
We too celebrate Children’s Day at our school. We had functions and we played various games. The small children in our school played games like hat passing, musical chairs, ball passing and balloons. We really had fun. And we had functions.
We were very happy enjoying the songs sung by our school kids. We were watching the pretty flowers dancing on the stage. There were many meaningful dramas for children. And there was a speech by our Head Girl.
We were happy after the function. We were treated with yoghurt from our teachers. We were surprised and very happy.

Gems
Sri Lanka has been famous for gem stones from the earliest times. The Sabaragamuwa Province is well known for gems. Ratnapura is known as Menikpura. It means the city of gems. It has gem museums displaying the wide range of gems available in the country.

The Blue Sapphire is the king of  Sri Lankan gems. The 400 carat Blue apphire is called the blue bell, which adorns the British crown. It is from Sri Lanka.  There are more gem stones such as Rubies, Garnets, Topazes, Cats Eyes, Moonstones, Tourmalines, Aquamarines and Alexandrites that are some of the precious stones found in Sri Lanka.
The cutting of gems is a specialized job. Gems are cut and polished before they are set. Different regions in the country have different ways of making jewellery. People also believe that gems have the power to bring luck.
