Suni Nirmalalingam – the artist – is back. Around 40 of her paintings will be on show at the Harold Peiris Gallery next weekend. It has been a while since her previous exhibition, ‘Undefined’ in 2002 and the artist has returned with her work for a second edition, titled ‘Undefined II’.

“My style is abstract,” Suni tells the Sunday Times. This is as close as it gets if one is to look for a unifying theme running through the pieces. “All of them are quite different.” Colour, texture and movement of her work depend purely on how she feels falling anywhere on a spectrum of vivid to muted tones. “I like colour, ” she says though her natural preference is for more earthy tones.
The calming effect of her canvas came to the painter later in life. “I did drawing in school” like many students with a flair for the creative. Picking-up the brush to paint became a part of her life after her children’s education when she had a bit more time on her hands.

Devoting the early part of the day to her art, Suni is admittedly a morning person “I hardly paint after lunch-time.” Unleashing her imagination which changes from day to day on the canvas requires optimum ambience and her choice is closer to dawn, “I like a lot of light.”

Snippets of her creativity immortalised on the canvas will be on show on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Harold Peiris Gallery of the Lionel Wendt Arts Centre.
