It was to felicitate a colleague who had risen from the ranks as a police constable to the prestigious post of Vice Chancellor that the ceremony was held on Wednesday at Police Headquarters with Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoone participating, on the momentous occasion of the 149th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Police.

The rise to eminence of Prof. Gallage Sirimal Ranawella who turns 94 next month from “PC to VC” and now lives a quiet life in retirement in Ratmalana was highlighted by the Sunday Times in a story headlined, ‘The PC who never gave up on his passion to learn’ on April 12, 2015. This was the article which helped focus the attention of the Police Force on Prof. Ranawella who had also later achieved eminence as an epigraphist.

The IGP who paid tribute to Prof. Ranawella, held him up as a model for police personnel to emulate.
