From July 2015, the last Wednesday of the month will be movie night at the British Council Library, with the launch of their new film club. From Hitchcock to Harry Potter, the UK has a long tradition of providing quality movie entertainment for all the family.

Movie night will be held on the last Wednesday of every month from 6.30 p.m. Each film will be introduced by curator Anomaa Rajakaruna and there will be a panel discussion immediately after the film, on various aspects of the film and film making.

Commenting on the launch of the film club, British Council Arts Manager, Tanya Warnakulasuriya said, “The idea behind the film club is to show Sri Lankan audiences British films that aren’t commonly seen here, either at the cinemas or on DVD. The panel discussions, afterwards, which will have guest appearances from film industry experts, are designed for true movie buffs to learn more about the film industry, the art of film making and how to watch a film critically, understanding nuances, sub-plots and character analysis, rather than passively watching a movie without thinking about it.”

The first series of films shown will introduce audiences to British Film Noir, showing three black and white classics starting with Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 screen adaptation of John Buchan’s adventure novel ‘The 39 Steps’.

The first screening will be at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22 at the British Council Library in Colombo and entrance is free of charge.
