Police are to file 37 cases, some of them backed by video evidence, against those who allegedly violated election laws after handing over nominations, a senior police officer said.Deputy Inspector General Roshan Dias said the cases would include charges of conducting processions soon after the nominations, pasting posters, putting up cutouts and election-related violence.

This is the first time the police are making use of video and photographic evidence to support their cases. The move came as Inspector General N.K. Illangakoon decided to visit each province and brief senior police officers on how they should maintain security, law and order during the election campaign.

The IGP briefed officials of the Sabaragamuwa Province on Friday and visited the Uva Province yesterday.DIG Dias said the IGP had instructed officials to gather more video and photographic evidence to support their cases against any violators irrespective of their party positions.

Meanwhile, 63 complaints of election violence or violations of election laws have been made to the police unit at the Elections Secretariat.
