True Sibling Spirit
When I was small I stayed lonely,
Spent my life a bit sadly,
All of my friends had their siblings to play,
I wished I could have one of mine someday.

Later on I got a Sis and a Bro,
Who always fought with each other like war,
They cut, chop, pinch and hit,
So Mum always used to carry a first aid kit.

Started being trouble for me,
I was very strict, as much as I could be,
“You’ll understand the value of them in future,”
Dad explained just like a tutor.

Time went by and we are now alright,
What Dad said was perfectly right;
Whole life will be precious,
cause we now inherit,
Bro and Sis, we finally found
the true sibling spirit!

Should parents choose the career paths of their children?

Parents know what is best for their children and usually help them to make good decisions for their future. From infancy until their teenage years, or even later, they are strongly influenced and guided by their parents. But should parents help determine their future or should they allow their children to choose their own careers?

In general there is nothing wrong in parents choosing a career that will suit their children. It’s because most of the time they mean well. They want to be sure that their children have a stable and financially rewarding career. Parents have more experience and are more realistic when it comes to career selection and life in particular. Though there is a generation gap between parents and children it is better to discuss and come to a decision. We should not go against our parents’ wishes.

The problem arises when the child is interested in a career that the parents are not agreeable with. The question now is, should the child follow his dreams or do what his parents say? The important factor in resolving this conflict is that the parents and children should talk things over and respect each other’s view.

Parents may have a say in their child’s future but a child’s life is his own and not an extension of the parent.

The annual procession of Ethkanda Viharaya

A procession means a collection or group of people who are moving according to a rhythm in a queue by bringing a very important thing. Ethkanda Viharaya, Kurunegala, organizes a procession annually, named as ‘Sri Dalada Poson Perahera.’ This is organized within the period after the Poson full moon poya day, but before the Esala full moon poya day. It is exhibiting a tooth of the Buddha in a very beautiful casket.

This year, the 90th procession was held on June 10, 11 and 12. This time the procession consisted of three main parts. The first two were held on June 10 and 11 evening and the last was held on June 12 at night. There were a lot of groups of dancers, drummers, whip-crackers, flag bearers, elephants and fire bearers in the procession. There were about 20 elephants in each procession.

Various organizations like the Youth Society, Meditation Society, Donations Committee, Dhamma School Development Society and various other organizations of the Ethkanda Viharaya organized the annual procession. The Dhamma School students also helped by bearing flags, as dancers and other purposes. I was also a flag bearer. With the help of all the organisations, they could do a very beautiful, meaningful and important service for the society as well as the country.

Ramazan fasting
This is the month of Ramazan.
In this month, all Muslims keep away from food, from dawn to dusk.
Fasting helps us in many ways. When fasting, you realize what hunger is, and how people suffer without food. It makes you feel pity for the poor and you are tempted to help the poor. We give money and food to the poor and when the Ramazan festival comes near, we give clothes and rice to poor people. Ramazan is a month of alms giving.
Fasting disciplines us. On normal days we eat anything and everything we come across. When fasting, you learn to control yourself from eating and drinking and doing sins.
In this month we spend time in prayers and reading the Koran. We do not gossip or speak ill of others, when fasting. We do not quarrel or fight or scold others. We spend our time in religious activities.
Fasting is not only abstaining from food but also from evil deeds. It gives a rest to our digestive system. It is said that fasting cures all diseases. Fasting controls pressure and diabetes.
The Koran was also revealed to Prophet Muhammad on the 27th night of Ramazan.
