An educational tour on ‘Colonial and Present- Colombo’, Names of Streets, and ‘Heritage of Kotte’ organised by Sri Lankan Adventure Travels was launched last week.

A showcase tour was conducted for 25 teachers of a leading International School in Sri Lanka; Gateway International on the 8th of June, 2015.This was done on the basis of ‘Teach The Teachers’ so that they could bring along their classes on subsequent tours. Dr Asoka Thenabadu Managing Director of Sri Lankan Adventure Travels, a Consultant Paediatrician living in the UK who has extensive experience in child development matters and an interest in Sri Lankan history, has put together a special programme to enhance the knowledge of the history of our country and uplift the sense of national pride amongst our school children and their teachers.

‘The History of Colombo’s Street Names, Places’ and ‘Heritage of Kotte’ Tours are conducted with the assistance of well known academics, Fred Medis and Prasad Fonseka. ‘The History of Colombo’s Street Names, Places’ and ‘Heritage of Kotte’ are special educational tours of Colombo City and the Kingdom of Kotte for school Teachers and Students are organised by Sri Lankan Adventure Travels. (Visit.srilankanadventuretravels.com) Today’s fast paced and highly competitive education system undoubtedly pushes a child’s mind to the limits. This could alienate a child further away from important subjects such as Arts and History which are greatly overlooked in today’s curriculum.

These subjects help a child to be creative and build self esteem and confidence later in life. To learn these effectively you need out-of -the-classroom activities to complement the standard syllabus.  To learn how the streets got their names and visit important landmarks in Colombo are quite interesting and reveal a history beyond text books. Needless to mention that the kingdom of Kotte still holds much to discover.

Such tours could be organised for schools, private organisations and clubs. Further details of these great educational and recreational tours for students and teachers could be found at http://srilankanadventuretravels.com/educational.html. Or contact on 011 2665478 / 011 2665479
