How I spent my April holidays
I was waiting eagerly till my April holidays arrived. Finally they came after my exams. First we planned to go to the hill country. Therefore we packed our suitcases with clothes, books to read, maps, a camera and a binoculars.  We left early morning to Bandarawela. On the way we saw waterfalls, step-like paddy fields, beautiful flower gardens and tea estates. We spent two days in Bandarawela.

After that we went to Yala. We stayed at hotel ‘Cinnamon Wild Yala. We went  on a safari into the Yala jungle. It is  called the Ruhunu National Park.
I saw lots of birds such as peacocks, bee-eaters, hornbills, fly catchers, pigeons and eagles. We went near the lakes full of water-lillies. In the lakes there were crocodiles, tortoises, water birds like ducks, darters, painted storks and cranes.

Under the trees there were sambur and deer, resting. There were some herds of elephants walking proudly with their young ones. Plenty of wild boars were seen grunting and digging the earth. In the muddy water-holes, buffaloes were bathing. We saw a pack of foxes crossing the road to the other side of the jungle. Finally we went to the Yala beach and enjoyed there. I was so happy about my journey.

Vesak Poya Day
Vesak falls in the month of May. Lord Buddha was born, enlightened and attained nirvana on a Vesak poya day. It is very important to Buddhists in the world.
On this day, people decorate their houses with lanterns, buckets, clay lamps and coloured bulbs. All the people go to the temple and some observe sil. We offer flowers and light clay lamps. Children light lanterns at night. Some people give dansals. We go out to see Vesak illuminations.
It is a religious festival.

I am a Master Chef
I simply love cooking, making juices and food decorating. Once I made popsicles and on another occasion I made fruit salad and sometimes I help my mum make cakes, pies, brownies, biscuits and shortbread.
I first learnt about MasterChef when I watched ‘MasterChef Junior Series 1’, with
my cousin who is a cooking enthusiast himself. A few days later, I made some fajitas with two of my cousins and my sister. In future I wish to become the best cook in MasterChef history and a successful businessman. I also wish that you can become MasterChefs too!

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. He is the most famous writer of plays in the English language. He married Anne Hathaway in 1582 and they had three children, Suzanna, born in 1583 and a boy and girl named Hamnet and Judith born in 1585.

When we learn world literature, we come across many writers of plays. William Shakespeare wrote plays for the people from the 16th – 17th century. As a playwright, Shakespeare contributed 38 plays to the English language. In his time a play with a happy ending was called a Comedy and a sad ending was a Tragedy. Among them the most criticized was ‘Hamlet the Prince of Denmark’. ‘Julius Caesar’ was a tragedy and the most famous ‘Merchant of Venice’ and ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ were both comedies.

Shakespeare’s plays were meant for the stage. They were very popular among the people of England. The last play that he wrote was ‘Henry VIII’ in 1612. The company was performing that play at the Globe Theatre on June 20, 1613 when the theatre was burnt to the ground. Shakespeare shone among his fellow writers and became very popular. William Shakespeare who rendered a great service to world literature died on April 25, 1616.

Life in the 25th century
Although some scientists believe in time travel, it’s technically impossible! But if you can imagine  the future, what would it be like?
These days, technology is conquering the world. From microscopes to space shuttles – scientists have proved that they are capable of doing almost anything. If this century is so advanced, imagine it in another four-hundred years.

There probably won’t be any trees to supply air. People will have to buy bottled oxygen. Cars would run on solar-powered jet boosters replacing wheels. Desktop and laptop computers will be history. Holographic equipment will be the latest technology. Man-servants would be replaced with robot progammes to do a series of household tasks.

Money won’t be heaps upon heaps of notes. It will probably be a card or disc into which money could be digitally downloaded. People will have so much work that they will have no time for meals. A single pill or food bar will fill their needs. Highways with automatic electrical roadsigns, milestones and speed detectors will dominate the lower skies. A planetary shield around the globe would act as a supporting ozone layer, reflecting damaging heat rays.

Just remember that all these are known as ‘Assumed Science.’ The 25th century maybe advanced, but for now we must worry about today’s matters. If we can keep the present troubles a safe distance away – the above two paragraphs would be a reality.

Uses of trees
Trees are very useful to us. They give us food to eat. We get most of our food from trees. Fruits, vegetables, green leaves and pulses come from trees. Not only that, trees produce oxygen for us to live. Trees give us shade when we are tired. We use wood from trees to make our furniture and houses.
On the other hand, trees make the environment very beautiful. We can’t even think to live without trees. Therefore it is our duty to protect and plant more trees without cutting them.

I became friendly with an elephant family
Once a baby elephant had lost his way and come to our home, My brother and  I fell in love with it and we wanted to keep it with us. So we named it Pepper.

One day, the mother elephant came rushing into our village. When it saw Pepper it came towards us. It broke everything on its way. It broke our gate, the trees and our vehicle which was parked near the gate. When Pepper saw its mother he ran towards her. The mother elephant came towards me and my brother. I stood there and my brother ran away. It wrapped me in its trunk and kept me on its back.

We went to the jungle and we all played. The father elephant was too big. We all went to the clump of trees and plucked the healthy fruits. We ate apples, oranges, rose apples and bananas. We ate and we went to the village. Everyone was amazed.

The elephants wanted to stay with us. So I kept them with me. I didn’t tie them with a rope. Instead I let them roam around. We play every evening and we lived happily ever after.

My hobby
My hobby is reading books. I like
to read
story books and Geography books.
I can learn about people and their ways of living from them.
I have a small library.
It is made up of books which my mother and father gave me as presents. I read daily papers every day.
We must learn to choose good reading material.
We must not read bad books which fill our minds with bad ideas. We must get help from our parents and teachers when we choose books to read. Good books can give us a lot of help whereas bad books may do us a great deal of harm. We must learn to choose books well and read what is useful and good.
