The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) said that, due to a lack of proper implementation, 51,000 students who passed the Grade 5 Scholarship exam are without schools.

CTU Secretary, Joseph Stalin has requested that the first action the new Education Minister should take is to set the cutoff marks for each school and provide all the students with schools, as soon as possible.

Stalin pointed out that former Education Minister, Bandula Gunawardena, lowered the exam’s pass-mark from 163 to 157. Consequently, the number of students who passed increased by more than a twofold. Due to this, the procedure to provide new schools, which is normally finished before end December, has not been done, though it is now mid-January, he said.
