Planetarium
I went to the Planetarium. It is in the next premises to the Colombo University.
It is a large building. It has a curved ceiling. On the
ceiling you can see the sky in a dark night. All the planets in the sky are there. The planets are shown with electric bulbs. We can listen to an announcer over the amplifiers. She explained an arrow start, it was like the darkness that grows with the sunset. At the end it was like the gradual dawn of day.
With my friends around me I enjoyed the trip very much. Our teachers were also with us. It was a nice school trip.

A bicycle speaks
I am a mountain bicycle. I’m pink in colour. I am proud to be a bicycle because I am an eco-friendly, economical vehicle. I was born in a very big bicycle factory in Japan.

I had thousands of brothers and  sisters in that factory. We lived  happily there.  One day, the factory owner packed me in a large box with some of my brothers and sisters. We sailed at last in a cargo ship and came to Colombo harbour in Sri Lanka. I was amazed and attracted to Sri Lanka’s beauty though it was a small island. The Sri Lankans were friendly and kind. Some people unwrapped us and sent us to a big bicycle bazaar. There I met a lot of friends. Lots of people came to the bicycle bazzar but none  of them wanted me.

One day, a girl named Thamalshi came to the bicycle bazzar with her mother to buy a bicycle. She set her eyes widely opened before me and cried, “Oh! What a nice bicycle.  I want to buy this bicycle only.” She took me to her home. I started liking my new mistress as she was very kind to me. She rode me
everywhere even to classes and church. We rode for miles and enjoyed ourselves. She kept me always clean and tidy. And now she looks very marvellous, active and healthy as she got exercise by riding me. I love to serve my mistress till the end of my life.

Value of reading
‘Reading makes a man’, so it is very important to get into the habit of
reading. By reading books, newspapers and other materials one can widen and improve one’s
knowledge a lot.
I enjoy reading and books are my greatest friends. It is my greatest pastime. I read books in my school library too.
I have a fair collection of books in my home too.
Reading is a valuable and precious habit we have to cultivate to gain success in life.

If I were an alien

If I were an alien, I would make everyone scared. I will have green sticky liquid on my body. I will have three blue eyes and five purple horns on my head. I will steal ice-cream and chocolate from the shops. I will make small children get scared. I will play tricks on everyone.
I will go to other people’s houses and break their pots, cups, plates and lots of things. I will steal their money. I will open their fridge and take all the food and I will eat the food very fast. I will watch TV in the houses. I will put my green liquid on everyone’s face. My green liquid will smell bad.
I will come to peoples’ houses at 3.30 midnight. I will knock on the doors and gates and make them scared. I will come at midnight in my spaceship. If I were an alien, I would do all these things.

My visit to the zoo
On Sunday we went to see the animals at the zoo. First we went to see the aquarium. There we saw beautiful fish. They were swimming in big tanks. We also saw other animals like lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, birds and butterflies. We saw serpents like the cobra, viper and rattlesnake in glass houses.
There were many big trees in the zoo. The monkeys played in their cages. The lions were in their dens. The tigers were in iron cages. I felt sorry to see them in cages. But I enjoyed my visit to the zoo.

A memorable journey

When our friends suggested a drive through the oasis of Liwa into the Empty Quarter, we were elated. Piling into the four-wheel drive vehicle, we coursed down
the highway bordered with
dust-laden date palms and rolling peanut brown sands. Distant dunes beckoned us to turn into the mysterious desert.
The architectural beauty of the huge Arabian coffee pot and cup
at the round-about and the
Tilal Liwa Hotel amazed us. After
a snack and fruit punch we bumped and bounced and lurched our way further into the desert, marvelling at the rippling orange sands and dazzling mirages.
Stopping at the Date Festival, we savoured golden, sweet dates, visited an oasis and a Bedouin village. A procession of majestic camels strolled by and we ventured a ride into the breath-taking sunset. Although well padded with cushions and rugs, their humps were uncomfortable. Rolling with laughter we clutched onto each other as we slid from side to side.

On our return, a mini sandstorm hit us and we hastily covered our faces with thick scarves. When it ceased, the landscape had changed!
As dusk fell and we entered
the highway Count Dee sang
‘Midnight at the Oasis’ and I gazed in rapt silence at the bright stars twinkling in the indigo sky and thanked God for the simple joys of life and magical memories that would linger forever.
