Teachers’ unions have condemned the assault on the principal of Thibbatuwawa Maha Vidyalaya in Kekirawa by the Vice Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabhawa (PS).
He said that the latest incident took place after Principal Lalith Madushanka Jayasiripura had taken the children outside after school, on the request of the Education Department, to pay homage to Buddha’s relics which were being taken in procession to a new “stupa”.

The children had stood on both sides of the road, when they got caught to the rain. The PS Vice Chairman, Sampath Herath’s two children were also among them.
Mr Herath was angered that his two children had got caught to the rain and assaulted the principal in the presence of the principal’s child. Following the assault, they had a protest in Kekirawa town, demanding that police take action.

Teacher Services Union General Secretary Mahinda Jaysinghe said that, though police took speedy action to arrest the Vice Chairman, subsequently a settlement was reached.
He said they were suspicious whether the principal was threatened, but if the principal doesn’t take a stand or allow the law to resolve the problem, they cannot take any action against the Vice Chairman. A senior police officer said that the complaint had been withdrawn as the matter had been resolved between the two parties.
