The first choir to take part in an international competition, a Soul Sounds concert is now an eagerly anticipated event. Known for their colourful performances from a variety of genres, the all-female ensemble will focus this time on sacred and classical music.

Since their advent as the Holy Family Convent Senior Choir, sacred music has always been a part of their repertoire under the direction of Soundarie David Rodrigo. ‘Sanctus’, the choir’s next performance on October 28, at 7.30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk is to feature well known spiritual classics and “some newer numbers with new arrangement,” Soundarie says.

The classical genre is by no means an easy one, but the Soul Sounds choir is looking forward to singing this music rich in harmony and composition. On the programme are classics like Ave Maria, Laudate Dominum, Panis Angelicus and the Lord’s Prayer.

The choir will be accompanied by Sureka Amerasinghe who has been with them throughout the year on flute. Trumpets are to add colour to the singing and Director of Music at St. Andrews Scots Kirk, Denham Pereira will be playing the pipe organ with Christopher Prins on drums. Guest artistes for this evening of sacred music are the Cantando Cello Ensemble directed by Dushy Perera.

This is the Soul Sounds sixth concert for the year – the choir hopes to stage ten, in celebration of a decade of their music. “All Soul Sounds concerts staged this year have been different,” Soundarie notes. Much thought goes into every appearance in terms of not just the music, but even in terms of lights and location she tells us. Pulling off a jazz concert in the breezy, laid back space at Barefoot to the psychedelically disco lights of the 80′s in their ‘Totally 80′s’ concert at the Wendt, she feels each concert brings “something different and special.”

‘Sanctus’ is on October 28, at 7.30 p.m. Sanctus. Tickets priced at Rs. 500 can be bought at the entrance and at the Soul Sounds Academy. For more information please call- 0722127988
