Hutchison Telecommunications Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, in what it described as a ‘community centric move that aptly demonstrates the company’s operational ethos’, last week announced its sponsorship of a revolutionary Patient Management System for the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital.
“We believe that the system we have helped introduce here will improve the well-being of mothers and children in the Batticaloa region. It is an investment in this community that we are honoured to make, and while this is currently a pilot project, we sincerely hope that this becomes a standard system in hospitals across the island.” said CEO of Hutchison Telecom Lanka, Thirukumar Nadarasa, in a media release.

The need for such a system was brought to the attention of Hutch by the University Paediatric Unit of Batticaloa, which had come to recognise that many parents tended to misplace the original infant record sheet they got from the hospital.

As a result the hospital had great difficulty accessing the record of the child’s history, a possibly critical problem when treating them for any subsequent serious illness. Also important maybe that parents would miss out on, or delay their child’s immunisation dates and follow up appointments due to the loss of their record sheet.

Mr. Nadarasa said this new system will allow doctors to have a back up record of their patients full history within the hospital database; this means that even if patients lose their records, the doctors can easily access a full copy at the touch of a button.

In addition patients will receive reminders via SMS alerting them to their next doctors’ appointment and immunisation schedule, ensuring better health and safety for all the children who come to the hospital for treatment, and peace of mind for parents and doctors alike.
The pilot of the Patient Management System was launched in Batticaloa in collaboration with the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians, in accordance with college policy.
