Well-equipped hostels of American standard for universities: SB
View(s):The Higher Education Ministry has decided to provide undergraduates with well-equipped hostels of American standards, Minister S.B. Dissanayake said at the foundation-stone laying of the proposed hostel building at the Institute of Indigenous Medicine at the University of Colombo in Moragasmulla, Rajagiriya, this Thursday (18).
The Minister said that, even though the initial plan was to build a hostel with 100 rooms, they had to reduce it to 49, for want of land.
“But we intend to purchase at least 20-24 acres of land. We have already decided to provide hostels with teakwood beds, tables and chairs, bathrooms of American standard, natural ventilation systems and common rooms with modern facilities including TV and radio facilities.
It will be the largest hostel project in Sri Lanka’s University history,” said Minister Dissanayake, addressing a gathering of undergraduates and university employees.
He added that students who get into universities should conduct research to increase the standards of the country. He explained that it is a good time to promote our traditional and indigenous medicine systems in the modern world, which is trying to discover the roots of the hidden Asian systems.
“I request my dear students to learn, learn and learn, as your motherland is waiting to be served by you. This is your time to serve her,” he said.
Ministry Secretary, Dr Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne, Additional Secretary P.G. Jayasinghe, UGC Chairperson, Prof Kshanika Hirimburegama and Colombo University Vice Chancellor, Dr Kumara Hirimburegama were also present at the event.
