Finally, I’m Icarus

I went begging to the birds
Each of them, for just one feather
A sharp one from the
vulture
A red one from the
bird of paradise
A green one with a touch of white from the humming bird
A coloured talking one from the parrot
A shy one from the ostrich
Oh, what amazing wings I’ve made for myself

I’ve attached them to my soul
And I’ve started to fly
Sharp flight of the vulture
Red flight of the bird of
paradise
Green flight (with a touch of white) of the humming bird
Talking flight of the parrot
Shy flight of the ostrich
Oh, how I’ve flown!

Value of trees
Trees add beauty to Nature.
They are part of the earth. Trees are very valuable to humans and animals because they give us many things such as shelter, food, medicine, fuel and timber.
Man cuts down trees in order to get timber for building houses and
making furniture. They give us
valuable medicine and food for
survival. Both man and animals
cannot live without trees.
Trees also give us rain. They
produce oxygen for human existence. Trees help to keep the environment clean. So if we cut down a tree it is our duty to replace it with another.

Advantages and disadvantages of air travel
Airplanes were first invented by the Wright brothers. When they first made the airplane it wasn’t fast nor very comfortable but it amazed the entire world because nobody in their wildest dreams had imagined they would be able to travel by air. When the Wright brother invented the airplane they would never have thought that  by the 20th century their invention would be able to travel.

faster than the speed of sound. However amazing that it may be there are many advantages as well as many disadvantages.
Air travel has made the world a smaller place. You can travel by air to other countries faster and also more comfortably and it is known to be safe. Many people own their own airplanes to save time and now by using air travel we can reach the four corners of the world in a matter of days.

In modern times air travel is called the safest mode of transportation. But about two to three air crashes happen every week. This may be because of engine failure or carelessness of pilots. Aircrafts are also used in wars. This great invention was not created to be used in wars as it was created to make man’s life more comfortable. Air pollution also occurs due to air travel so proper procedures should be taken by the authorities in charge. So we should know how to use machines for our advantage and not in ways that will be harmful to us.

Sigiriya
Sigiriya is an ancient
fortress. It was built by King Kasyapa. This rock fortress is world famous for its frescoes. We can see the inscriptions too on the Mirror Wall. They are called ‘Sigiri graffiti.’ These inscriptions have been
written by visitors.
There is a flight of steps to the top of the rock.
It is through the mouth of a huge carved lion.
So at the beginning, this rock fortress was called ‘Sinhagiriya.’ Later it became Sigiriya. The height of this fortress is 600 feet. Tourists who come to Sri Lanka never fail to visit this place.

Environment
The surrounding that we live in is known as the environment. Plants, animals, air, water, rivers, sea, mountains and forests etc., are things in the environment.
Natural disasters like floods,
tsunami, landslides etc., damage the environment and make people die. Some things are polluted by human and animal activities, For example, smoke from vehicles and factories, fire, putting garbage to the water and land, cutting down trees. So the
environment gets polluted and people will get many sicknesses.
By protecting the environment we
protect beauty. Air, water and land should also be clean. Then people will be healthy and strong.
To protect the environment we should grow plants. And we should not put garbage to rivers. We should protect our environment for future generations.

A dream
Yesterday, after an enjoyable day with my friends, we had a good
dinner and went to bed early. Because I was tired, I immediately fell asleep.
I dreamt that we went on a picnic to a faraway place. It was a rural area. We took our baggage and walked into a small forest. We could hear the whistle of the birds and sounds of animals. We sat on a log and had our lunch. After lunch we started on our return journey.
After some time I felt that all my friends had walked before me and I lost my way back home. I was left alone in the forest. I cried and I ran fast to find the way, but couldn’t. I was so frightened and I cried and fell down off the bed. Then I realized that it was a dream.
