An autobiography of a pencil

I am a pencil. My name is Apsara. I was born in India. I am durable, unbreakable and very strong. I am extremely dark and long-lasting. I am grey and black in colour. Many people in many parts of the world use me. I am very famous and very useful for children. I am often used in schools, classes and at exams.
My eleven friends and I were sold.
together in a box. My owner is Hasna. She wobbles me when she is thinking of an answer and she also bites me when she is angry. She keeps me safely in a box and looks after me carefully. One day Hasna lost me and she was really worried. She found me inside her book. I like her very much.
Many children throw my friends down and they are often injured. I get a bad  headache when someone puts me inside a sharpener. I am very happy and proud
to be a pencil.

Glory of the awakening eastern valley

Under the scorching sun, there lies two historical temples in the Ampara district of the Eastern Province. They are the Muhudu Maha Viharaya and the Maghul Maha Viharaya. The Muhudu Maha Viharaya is located in Pottuvil town, close to the beautiful Arugam Bay beach which is famous as a surfing site. This temple was built during the era of King Kelanitissa when a  tsunami wave hit Sri Lanka.

King Kelanitissa put his daughter, Princess Devi in a decorated canoe and sent her out to sea in order to protect the country from the
tsunami. The storm-tossed  princess landed at the place where the Muhudu Maha Viharaya is located today. This area was ruled by King Kavantissa. When he heard about the princess he came and asked, “Ko Kumari?” Later this area was called ‘Komari’. The villagers replied and said, ‘Aragame.’

That area is now called ‘Arugam Bay.’ The place where Princess Devi bathed, is known as ‘Prarthana Gala’ (wishing stone) and is marked with a few stone pillars today. The image house nearby has three statues. The two other than the Buddha statue are believed to be of King Kavantissa and Queen Vihara Maha Devi. The golden canoe in which Princess Devi sailed is said to be deposited there.

It is believed that a lot of ruins of the Muhudu Maha Viharaya are hidden under the huge sand bar on the beach. During the 2004 tsunami some villagers had seen a Buddha statue and chetiya that emerged when a large area of land previously covered by the sea, was revealed.

The place where the wedding ceremony of King Kavantissa and Princess Devi took place is now marked as the Maghul Maha Viharaya. A unique moonstone is found there which has elephants with mahouts carved in. This is not seen on moonstones in any other kingdom.

These hidden historical places reveal our proud history. It is essential to make people aware and to contribute towards protecting these places for posterity.

My favourite book
I have read many books during the last few years. But Oliver Twist written by Charles Dickens is the book that I like most. The author of Oliver Twist is a famous person in the world. The main character of this story is a boy called Oliver Twist. This boy was born in a workhouse and his mother died at his birth. Oliver’s father was not known. In the end Oliver Twist became a successful person.
I like to read this novel because it brings me joy,
happiness and knowledge.

The role of newspapers
Newspapers are the mirrors of
the world. They are the lifeline of the society and our greatest friends.
Newspapers have an important role in society. They bring us news from all parts of the world. The letters NEWS stands for North, East, West and South. Newspapers have become an indispensable feature in modern life.
Newspapers are instrumental in bringing the whole world within the reach of the common man every
morning.
Every newspaper has various
sections catering to the interests
of everyone – political news,
international events, society
interests, sports, economic and
business section, news, fashion,
cartoons and so on. Advertisements are helpful for those in search of jobs, houses or sites, grooms or brides,
educational options etc.
A newspaper is considered the cheapest means to get all the
information and local and foreign news. Some newspapers are published daily while others are published
weekly. The Sunday papers provide supplements including lots of articles on various subjects that are
interesting and educative.
A newspaper helps to form
public opinion on many burning issues. Newspapers help rulers to
fulfill shortcomings in the society. They also reveal various corruptions
committed by government officials and also about the waste of public funds.
A newspaper should always be truthful and impartial. Then only will it become popular among its
readers.

My mother
My brothers and I respect my mother. She brought us to the world. Mother treats all the children alike. She takes care of us. Mother helps us to do our homework. She never gets tired. Mother cooks and washes our clothes.
According to Islam, paradise lies at the feet of mother. Mother gets up early in the morning and cooks. When I was born she looked after me and gave us milk and fed until I grew. She bathed me. And she brings me lots of things.
I love my mother so much. She is the best friend in my life. I am very happy about my mother because she is working alone without getting any help from any one.

Let’s protect the environment
The environment is the
surrounding around us. Water, air, trees, land and beings are the parts of the environment. Today,
environmental pollution has become a major problem. People pollute the water by mixing poisonous chemicals and waste matter. Air is polluted by mixing smoke and poisonous gases issued through the chimneys of large factories. Land is polluted by
collecting garbage.
People cut down trees in a careless manner. They never think of the bad effects of it. We get the most needed rain because of the trees. Trees help not only man but also animals. Birds build their nests on trees. Trees stop soil erosion too. If we want to lead a healthy life, we should keep our environment clean.

Animals and birds
Animals and birds are gifts of nature. They make the world beautiful. They too are living beings. Their needs are similar to ours.
They need food, water and a place to live. They have their natural
dwelling places. Animals are also very much
similar to humans. The only difference is that they can’t think like humans. Both animals and birds are part of the earth.
Our duty is to protect them and let them live in peace.
