Animal sacrifice goes ahead despite objections

View(s):

Four hundred goats and one hundred and fifty fowls were sacrificed at the Kavunavaththai Viravar temple at Tellippalai in the Jaffna peninsula yesterday.

This year some Hindu well wishers filed a case at the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court to stop the animal sacrifice. The court ruled that if the local authority grants permission to conduct the animal sacrifice it could go ahead in the presence of the Public Health Inspectors and under police supervision.

Some Hindu activists led a fasting campaign to stop the animal sacrifice, but the temple management did not agree to stop the practice.
Last year the Army made an attempt to stop the animal sacrifice, but the sacrifice took place at different locations. Earlier when the LTTE which was dominating parts of the Jaffna peninsula it also made an attempt to stop the sacrifice, but failed.
