‘Hamlet’ filming for Shakespeare’s 450th Birthday

Celebrating the 450th birthday of William Shakespeare, the Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka will start its latest film production, the cinema version of ‘Hamlet’ on April 23.  A cast comprising veteran stars in local cinema including Jeewan Kumaranatunga, Veena Jayakody, Rex Kodippili and Clitus Mendis are to play the main roles together with other talented and up-and-coming artistes like Sarath Dikkumbura, Buddhika Abeyratne, Wijith Medawala and Thilini Perera.

In the technical crew experienced playwright and one of the pioneers who introducedShakespearean theatre to Sri Lankan audience, Gamini de Silva is the screenplay writer and director while the art director is Harshantha Perera, music director is Pradeepa Jayathunga and director of photography Sujith Nishantha.

On behalf of the Shakespeare Centre an organisation which has been promoting Shakespearean productions in Sri Lanka for more than 20 years, the film is produced by Nimal Chandrasiri, Dhammika de Silva, Kithsiri Hewagamage, Indrajith Sanarasekara, K. V. O. W. Wijegunaratne, Rushan Fernandopulle, Sunil de Silva and K. A. Siriwardena.
