My favourite person
My favourite person is Wilbur Wright. He was an American. I like him because he and his brother Orville, created the first controlled flight aircraft called the Flyer I.  In the olden days, people tried to fly using wings made of feathers. But it was not successful. Later, hot air balloons appeared. Afterwards Zeppelins replaced balloons.

Zeppelins are big cigar-shaped airships. The Hindenburg was the largest airship ever built.  It was a Zeppelin 803 feet long.
The Hindenburg suddenly exploded and thereafter no more Zeppelins were ever made.  Anyway, Orville and Wilbur Wright were working in a bicycle company at that time. While working there, they got an idea about how to make an aircraft. They did various experiments to find out what the best shape was. Finally on December 17, 1903 their dream came true. They built Flyer I, also called the ‘Canard’ meaning ‘Duck’ in French because the front looked like a duck’s neck stretched out!
Although aircrafts have changed over the years, one thing hasn’t, the wings.

An interesting exhibition

An exhibition of paintings by famous artists was organized by the Cultural and Artistic Association at the Art Gallery. Being very fond of painting, my family and I went there early in the morning. Men, women and children in their colourful and best dresses were all there. At the booking counter there were long queues. My father bought the tickets and we entered the exhibition ground. The ground was packed with people. Group by group, people were entering the exhibition grounds. Their faces were radiant with joy. On the walls, different patterns of modern painting were hung.

Most of them reflected daily activities and some of them brought us into a world of imagination and dreams. As we moved to the exhibition halls,
I heard the voice of some men who were telling the visitors about the artists and their work.
Feeling tired after hours of walking, I sat on a bench and rested for a while. The exhibition offered me precious minutes of relaxation and enriched my imagination. Before leaving, I bought a postcard of my favourite paintings to keep as a remembrance of this exhibition and with satisfaction in my mind
I went home.

Parents are our best friends
Many of us are not aware of the above fact. Our parents are the true people with whom we can share both our happiness and sadness with. We can also get help from them while arriving at conclusions in hard situations. A small chat with them will refresh our minds for sure.In some instances, we feel that they show a lot of anger towards us. We think that they hate and dislike us. But it is another way in which they show their kindness. It is also because they want us to reach a high attitude in life. During many circumstances our parents’ words and advice give us a helping hand. They guide us to the correct path.

Sometimes we keep searching for people on whom we can rely upon for true support and encouragement. Our parents are the best friends who are great pillars of support at many times. We should thank God for blessing us with parents who shower their love and care upon us. They provide the best of what they can afford. They do all these good deeds for us without any kind of expectations. We in return should never forget their love and kindness. We should obey them and also be a great support to them in future.

New Year
The Sinhala and Tamil New Year generally falls on April 14. It is a day of great joy and feasting to all.
A couple of days prior to the festival  people set about making preparations for the dawn of the New Year. Houses are colour-washed and compounds well swept. Parents go shopping in order to buy new clothes and the things necessary to prepare special meals on that day.

The New Year is ushered in by the lighting of crackers. All the members of the family have a bath early in the morning. Clad in their new clothes, they go to the temples and take part in the special poojas there. After prayers, they return home and enjoy a delicious breakfast of milk rice, which is the special meal for the
occasion. Then the head of the  family gives cash as presents wrapped in betel leaves to all the members of the household and to friends and relatives as well.

On the festival day, the grown-ups play cards or enjoy a chat with their friends. The youngsters have a jolly good time lighting crackers or
playing national games like ‘thatchy’ and kiddy.’ At noon friends and  relatives are entertained to a grand lunch. The New Year Festival is thus a day of great rejoicing for both the young and the old.

The importance of English
English is an international
language. It is used as a medium of communication in many parts of the world. It is widely spoken in many countries. Most of the books written by great authors are written in the English language. Books based on English Literature, Science, Medicine, Engineering and other fields of study are printed in English. Hence in order to read these books we must have a good knowledge of English.

Without English it is difficult to pursue higher studies. Some people think that learning English makes  one lose one’s love for his country.
We cannot agree with this. Learning English does not denationalize a man. On the other hand, it enriches a man’s knowledge and makes him more
patriotic. We must all agree that we must not copy English culture and  forget our nationality.

While preserving our culture and traditions, we must learn English because it is the gateway to world knowledge. Our doctors, engineers and scientists will lose a lot if they are unable to gather new information from English books. To do research they need English. English is
acknowledged all over the world.

Then let us learn English while giving pride of place to our own culture.
