DPL profits down, appoints new Deputy Managing Director
View(s):Dipped Products Ltd (DPL), which went through a difficult year in 2013 owing to protests over its Rathupaswala latex glove manufacturing factory, has appointed R.L. Witanachchi as Deputy Managing Director of the company with effect from January 2014, accrding to an announcement on Monday.
It was unclear as to whether the position is a new one or had existed before. Group pre-tax profit fell to Rs. 1.1 billion from Rs. 1.6 billion in the same quarter in the previous year. The Hayleys Group subsidiary said turnover fell marginally by 0.4 per cent to Rs. 17.4 billion for the 3rd quarter 2013/14. Local manufacturing FOB turnover dropped by 11 per cent to Rs. 5.5 billion during the period under review due to the closure of the Gampaha district facility. The company has announced that it is relocating the production facility to the Biyagama investment zone.
DPL has strenuously denied claims that water pollution in the area was due to waste from the factory.
