Well known director Jerome De Silva will take ‘Hobbit’ fans on an ‘Unexpected Journey’ through Middle Earth when he conducts a dramatic and interactive reading of ‘The Hobbit’ by J.R.R. Tolkien.

This cloak and dagger adventure of Bilbo Baggins and his voyage of wars and espionage, transformed into blockbuster thrillers at the hands of Peter Jackson, will be reviewed in a magical and theatrical interpretation by Jerome. Organized by Cargills Bookcity, this would be the first in a series of art and literature events that would feature some of the country’s most accomplished artists dissecting global and local masterpieces.

Jerome says there is a ‘Hobbit’ in each one of us. “I don’t mean the leathery feet covered with a nicely brushed coat of hair but in our ordinariness. How little we know of our potential until that potential is unleashed and almost as if by magic we become something very extraordinary with an unexpected depth of strength and resolve,” he said.

Many would view ‘The Hobbit’ as a children’s book. However Jerome says the movies by Jackson have gone a long way in unravelling the deft scholarship and profound reflection of Tolkien that has made everything about Mirkwood, Goblingate and Esgorath so ripe and in its own way so true. “Hobbit is a book that would be the funniest read to children but when you read it again and again as I have, you unravel so much character and depth in it that we as adults enjoy in the movie versions of the saga,” Jerome added.

So it’s a treat for the young and the old when Jerome retraces the genius of Tolkien and Jackson’s own interpretation on Saturday, February 8 at 5.30 p.m. at Cargills Bookcity, Majestic City. Call 011-2593035 to reserve your place. Tickets are priced at Rs 1,000.

Note: The Hobbit- The Desolation of Smaug is now showing at MC- Superior (10.30 am, 1.30 p.m., 4.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.)
