Police sergeant in gun fury arrested
View(s):A police sergeant has been grounded after he is alleged to have deserted his duty area and embarked on a shooting spree while at the same time threatening an individual, officials said.
The police officer is attached to the Marawila Police Station in the Chilaw Division, they said.
According to the officials the shooting took place at a location in Irabadagama. The officer is alleged to have gone to a private residence in the area carrying his service issue firearm and later fired into the air while threatening the occupants of the house, they added.
The frightened occupants of the house had phoned the police emergency squad which rushed to the scene, disarmed the sergeant and arrested him.
Investigations have revealed that the sergeant had fired at least two rounds of ammunition during the shooting spree.
Marawila Police are conducting further investigations. The motive for the policeman’s action is yet to be established, according to the officials.
