Matara Youth FC and New Star FC Panadura became the first two teams to qualify for the pre-quarterfinal stage of the Cargills Food City FA Cup Championship after their wins recorded against two top opponents yesterday. Champions League competitors Super Sun and Pelicans were the two unlucky losers despite their exposure playing amongst the top 20 football teams of the country, after the six-month long tournament which ended last month.

Matara Youths beat Super Sun by three goals to nil in a battle that guaranteed the winner a berth among the top 16 teams of the massive knockout competition, which has attracted close to 200 teams. The winners led at halftime by 1-0 after a cautious start in the game played at Vernon Fernando Stadium in Kalutara.

In the second game played at the City Football Complex in Colombo, New Stars beat Pelicans by three goals to two on penalty shootouts after the game ended 1-1 at fulltime. New Star were destined to win the game after having led the halftime by 1-0 and held on to the lead almost into the final whistle until the Pelicans struck the equaliser.
