General Azavedo made proper use of this opportunity. He conquered the areas that he had lost earlier, and chased away the rebels of Matara. He could not do anything to Antonio Baretto and Kangara Arachchi.

These were two individual who always worked against the Portuguese. However, Azavedo did not have the strength to fight against them as his army was small in number. Furthermore, the King of Portugal asked him to maintain peace as far as possible and oppose only the Dutch.

The king had also advised the Viceroy, to make Colombo and Galle as strong as possible. The king had got news to the effect that due to the fighting, much suffering had been caused to the people of the country by the Portuguese.

The king had ordered an immediate inquiry to be held regarding this matter. In addition, he had heard that injustice had been caused to the Sinhala people over land distribution. To rectify matters, he sent a revenue officer to make a compilation of all the lands.

King Senerat was one who disliked opposition in whatever form. He was longing to free the country from any foreign invasion. The former king Vimaldharmasuriya had succeeded in controlling Portuguese power to a certain extent during his lifetime.
