Zonta International, an association of professional and business women recently announced the launch of “Zonta Says NO” – an international campaign to raise awareness of and increase actions to end violence against women and girls around the world, whilst partnering the United Nations and its agencies.

The campaign, featured 16 days of activism between November 25 and December 10 involving services and advocacy action around the Zonta clubs and districts to prevent and end violence against women and girls in their local communities. The five Zonta clubs in Sri Lanka worked tirelessly with District Governor, Dr. Marlene Abeywardene in initiating many activities around the country including a petition to end violence and highlight the plight of women and children in Sri Lanka, with the support of First Lady, Shiranthi Rajapaksa.

Other activities were an awareness campaign through posters on public transport, a hair and beauty clinic for 500 guests in Negombo, the pinning of orange ribbons on hoteliers, medical staff at hospitals, free trade zone employees, and workers at Colombo’s World Trade Centre (see photographs) and social media campaigns (see Facebook Zonta Says No Sri Lanka), in conjunction with the UN’s Orange Day to end gender based violence which covers wide ranging topics from ‘Cyber Space as Safe Space for Women and Girls’, ‘Sexual Violence against Women and Girls in Conflict’ and ‘Safe Schools for Girls’.
