“I thought I should start classes on photography because I see so many people with really good cameras but I seldom see a good photograph. It doesn’t matter what brand your camera is, what matters is your knowledge. You have to know the basics of photography. With the proper basic knowledge a good photograph can be taken with even a simple small camera. Many seem to think Photoshop is the answer but it isn’t. I started this trade long before the software became popular; we don’t need software to make a picture look good. This is what I want to teach the young generation,” says Sanjaya.

Known for his food photography and his fashion photography, the secret behind his work is patience, observance and commitment. “It’s about knowing the amount of detail that goes in to the limited number of pixels in a photo. Too much detail will crowd your picture and too little will make it worthless,” he says.

“In food photography, many people work with synthetic food or food models because it’s easier to handle but I prefer to work with real food. You shouldn’t depend on the camera. The technique is to use the camera the way you like to get the best possible picture. It’s of course easier to do fashion photography because you can pose the model the way you want. But that too has to be done carefully. You have to set the mood for the shoot,” he says.

The course will be held over five weekends at Sanjaya Vithana Photography at 10/2, 5th Lane, Gangaboda road, Suwarapola, Piliyandala. The fee will be Rs.10,000 for the whole course. Sanjaya can be contacted on 0723374145.
