From Sudu Ganga to garbage dump

View(s):

A tributary of Sudu Ganga which flows through the Matale town and is a main source of the Mahaweli Ganga been turned into a major refuse dumping ground.  Wariayapola Watte with a population of over 300 families on the Dole Road, is rapidly becoming uninhabitable with the pollution producing bad odour and giving rise to unhygienic conditions.

The deteriorating environmental conditions has especially affected young children who have fallen prey to a variety of ailments such as respiratory problems and skin infections. Daljith Aluwihare, a member of the opposition in Matale Municipal Council said the issue could be easily tackled if the mayor took an interest.

“If I am given the responsibility to handle the project I will show them how it could be done. I would utilise the Sewanatha Sampath Madyasthanaya which was set up four months ago to solve this issue” he said.

The Sewanatha Sampath Madyasthanaya -a recycling centre does not accept garbage unless it has been sorted and separated at the source, as a result the Municipality is not fully utilising the facility to its full capacity.

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see. This major source of the Mahaweli now a garbage dumping ground

Who is to blame for this sad state of affairs?
