A female teacher attached to a leading school in Ja-Ela had swindled Rs. 5.5 million from a man promising to get him a job at a motor vehicle company in Japan. The teacher (48) thus lured the unsuspecting victim Prabath Chaminda (32) to give her, on October 2, 2009, the amount as an advance to get him a position in the management of the company. However, the man was instead sent to Seychelles but was later sent back to Sri Lanka after his documents were checked.

When he realised that he was cheated Chaminda went to the teacher claiming his money back. She has given him Rs. 4.1 million but avoided giving him the rest of the money, offering various excuses. Later he had lodged a complaint with the Ja-Ela police who remanded the teacher.

Negombo Chief Magistrate A. M. N. P. Amarasinghe ordered her release on surety bail of one million rupees. She was given time to pay back the rest of the money in six instalments.
