Adios Sasha, my dearest friend

Sasha was my closest companion for the past twelve years. She was the most exceptional dog I have ever had, which is why I think I loved her, as I did no other. She was by my side as I slept, prayed, read, wrote or ate; walked by me to the car whenever I went out, waited for me at the gate when I returned. Even within the precincts of my home, she would lift her head to see where I was, rise and follow me, wherever I went. It was almost as if she said ’Whither thou goest, I will go’. She obeyed only me, no-one else could get her to do what they wanted.

Her eyes, as she looked at me were like melting pots of chocolate with love shining through. Sasha and I shared a special love and bond, she was the most loyal and affectionate dog I ever had, but her love was solely for me, she was strictly a one woman dog. She hated anyone coming into my room, followed the maids as they cleaned and swept the room and guarded me fiercely and possessively. She has never ever growled at me, even when I cleaned her ears or gave her medicine, she would only whine.

She sensed my every mood; whenever I was hurt or unhappy, through the inevitable storms of life, she was there for me, comforting me, putting her head on my lap and gazing up at me. Sasha was with me through many changes and upheavals in my life; she was a haven for me, from all life’s travails, asking for nothing but my love, care and the security of my presence.
Ever since I was told a year ago, that a Dobermann’s life span was ten years, she was eleven then with a heart ailment, I had dreaded this moment of parting. My most fervent daily prayer was that she wouldn’t suffer with a long illness, pain or discomfort. My prayers were answered, as when the end came, it was quick and free of suffering for her, but a shock and heartbreakingly painful for me, as it still is. The strange thing was that it was Sunil my driver who had driven me to Negombo, when I bought her twelve years ago, and she died with both of us by her side.

My life will never be the same without her; but nevertheless, it is a comfort to know, that she will be there waiting for me, when I reach that wonderful shore.
