Niroshini Hemadasa was only a baby when her mother Dayani formed the Sasana Abhiwurdhi Wardhana Society Sinhala Cultural Dance Troupe in Kuala Lumpur. Born to Sri Lankan parents in the Malaysian capital, Niroshini grew up with a strong foundation in dance so it’s no surprise that aged just 20, she performed her Arangetram (Bharata Natyam dance graduation) yesterday (September 14) in Kuala Lumpur.

While she started learning her Sri Lankan dance basics as a toddler, her mother encouraged her to also learn the classical Indian dance form. Niroshini was enrolled in the Temple of Fine Arts in Brickfields, KL to learn Bharata Natyam and Carnatic vocals. Her teenage years were a whirlwind of performances and television appearances (she has appeared on numerous programmes, including Sri Lanka’s own Kids First when she was 16).

She has taken part in numerous productions including Prince Siddhartha, Panchaman, Maha Prajapathi, Givinda and has performed in Malaysia, India and Sri Lanka.

Besides being a versatile dancer Niroshini also plays the piano, holds a black belt in Taekwondo, and is currently studying for her medical degree at the International Medical University under a twinning programme.
