The Portuguese armies marched to Thalampitiya. There they had to face the opposition of the army of King Vimaladharmasuriya. The Portuguese army was weakened and they fled to save their lives. The king’s forces, once again attacked the Portuguese security forces at Manikkadawara and defeated them.

The king did not mean to stop there. Once again, he marched his army to Thalampitiya and defeated the Portuguese there. As a result, most of the internal Portuguese fortresses were won by the king. Large crowds had to become his prisoners. It looked a temporary victory for the Sinhala forces.

It is during this time, that the Dutch commander Seebold De Vaart came to Sri Lanka. He came here as a naval officer manning six ships. He had been appointed Vice-Admiral by this time. In the ships he brought, there were a lot of soldiers. They landed in Batticaloa. The king was overjoyed to receive this news.

During this period, the Portuguese were undergoing a lot of hardships. Their forces were weakened. The king thought that this was the ideal time to chase the Portuguese completely, out of this island. So the king thought of besieging them from land.

The king requested the Dutch commander to do the same from the sea, at Galle. But as the Dutch were mainly interested in improving trade, the commander did not pay any heed to this request. He continued to stay a few more days in Batticaloa.
