Emma Watson is to star in a new fantasy franchise. The Bling Ring actress is set to reunite with Harry Potter producer David Heyman and Warner Bros., the studio behind the lauded wizard movies, for a new series of films, Variety reports.

Described as a female version of fantasy franchise Game of Thrones, the movies will be based on Erika Johansen’s upcoming book trilogy, Queen of the Tearling. The film series will document the tale of 19-year-old princess Kelsea Glynn – to be played by Watson – who attempts to reclaim her late mother’s kingdom, the Tearling, from the clutches of an evil witch called the Red Queen.

The first of the fantasy novels, which are set three centuries after an environmental catastrophe, will be published in 2014. Publisher Harper Collins said of the trilogy: ‘An insightful human story whose heroine is grappling with both the daily realities of coming-of-age and the ethical dilemmas of ruling justly, all while simply trying to stay alive.’

New challenge: Emma Watson will assume the leading role in a trilogy of movies based on Erika Johansen's upcoming book series, Queen of the Tearling
