Natural Disasters

A disaster is an event that causes a lot of harm or damage to people and the environment including plants and animals. A disaster could be caused by human activities or it could happen naturally. Natural disasters are floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes and many others. All these disasters are caused due to certain defects in some of the areas of the Earth we live in.

Floods occur in places where there is heavy rainfall. Earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions occur due to the violent movement of the ocean beds and rapid vibration of the earth’s crust. Hurricanes and tornadoes are strong winds that affect the environment, humans and vegetation.

All these disasters can cause enormous damage and loss of life. Buildings, roads and bridges collapse. Sometimes raging fires spread due to the snapping of gas pipes and electric cables. Many people lose their homes. As natural disasters can be very harmful, we as human beings must always be prepared to face such a danger and be aware of how to protect ourselves during such situations.

A day I spent in my bed

I am a healthy person and never fall sick, whereas my brother is often ill. My father, mother and grandmother are very careful about his health and cater to all his wishes. When he’s not well we have to reduce the volume of the TV, switch off the fan and keep our voices low.

One day, when my mother woke me, I didn’t feel like getting up. I had a headache. Mother touched my forehead and said I was running a fever. How happy I was! Now everybody had to do whatever I wished. My mother brought milk and biscuits for me. She scolded my brother for making a noise. She asked him to switch off the TV. I felt very important – like a lord. Little did I know that my joy would only be for a few days.

Soon my temperature rose and I felt hot and restless. The headache became severe. It was really annoying me. My favourite uncle came to take me to Savoy Theatre but as I was not well he took my brother. I was so disappointed. The last straw came when I saw the delicious feast my mother had prepared for uncle. Everybody sat down for lunch and had such fine dishes while I was forced to take only bitter pills, milk and porridge. I was cursing my fate.

Luckily, the next day my temperature came down to normal. I learnt a lesson in my life. It is not fun being ill and staying in bed.
